This amendment overturned O regon v. M itchell , which ruled that an amendment to the V oting R ights A ct (1965) could not impose 18 as the voting age in state elections. Sent to the states on 23 March 1971, last ratified by Ohio on 30 June 1971, and officially proclaimed on 5 July 1971, it extends the privilege of voting in state and federal elections to all citizens on their eighteenth birthday.
