The US first formally offered to buy Tex. from Mexico under John Q. A dams , and all presidents did so until the T exas R evolt. The rise of abolitionism led many northerners to oppose the admission of another slave state, but in 1844, John C alhoun spurred John T yler to negotiate an annexation treaty, which was defeated by W hig party senators eager to embarrass a Democratic president. The 1844 election pitted James P olk , who favored annexation, against Henry C lay , who opposed it. Polk saw his victory as a mandate to make Tex. a state, but before he took office, Tyler won congressional approval for annexation on 1 March 1845.
