In January 1968, the largest oil field yet found in the US was discovered on the North Slope of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Proposals to tap this energy source were blocked by environmental suits in federal court until the oil embargo , when Congress passed the Alaska Pipeline Act (16 November 1973), which forbade further court review of the project's environmental impact.
