(18 March 1766) Parliament passed this law simultaneously with its repeal of the S tamp A ct . Modeled after a Declaratory Act for Ireland (1719), it proclaimed Parliament's authority to legislate for the colonies “in all cases whatsoever.” Although a denial of American claims to be exempt from taxes passed in Britain, it was ignored in the thirteen colonies , and so did not emerge as a major issue contributing to the D eclaration of I ndependence . ... log in or subscribe to read full text
