(b. Montpelier, Vt., 26 December 1837; d. Washington, D.C., 16 January 1917) In 1858 Dewey graduated from the Naval Academy, and fought in the C ivil W ar . Although trained on wooden sailing vessels, he achieved full tactical mastery over steam-powered, armored warships. He assumed command of the Pacific squadron just before the S panish -A merican W ar . When told of the war's commencement, Dewey left Hong Kong on 26 April and steamed 600 miles to M anila B ay in six days; he destroyed Spain's fleet on 1 May and directed amphibious operations in the Philippines.
