(b. Bow, N.H., 16 July 1821; d. Newton, Mass., 3 December 1910) Following a history of ill health and the death of her first husband by a fever, she experienced relief from a serious injury in 1866 after seeking cure through prayer. This experience led her to the doctrines of spiritual self-healing that became the Christian Scientists’ Association, which was organized in 1876 and chartered as the Church of Christ, Scientist in 1879 at Boston. She established the Mass. Medical College in 1881, opened the first Christian Science reading room in 1888, and first published the Christian Science Monitor in 1908. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
