(b. San Francisco, Calif., 26 March 1875; d. Boston, Mass., 29 January 1963) He spent his early life in San Francisco, matured in Lawrence, Mass., and briefly studied at Dartmouth and Harvard. In 1912, he decided to move to England and write full-time. His A Boy's Will (1913) brought him critical acclaim, as did North of Boston (1914). He returned to New England in 1915. Beginning with New Hampshire: A Poem with Notes and Grace Notes (1923), he won four Pulitzer prizes (also Collected Poems , 1931, A Further Range , 1937, and A Witness Tree , 1943). Over forty universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, awarded him honorary degrees for his verse, which is marked by simplicity of expression and subtlety of meanings. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
