On 10 December 1941, 5,500 Japanese captured Guam's garrison of 200 US marines and 300 Guamanian police. US losses: 4 marines and 15 police killed. On 21 July 1944, the Third USMC and 77th Army Divisions landed on Guam. Organized resistance ended by 10 August, but 8,000 poorly armed Japanese undertook ineffective guerrilla harassment from jungles. US losses: 1,400 killed, 6,500 wounded.
