(b. Norfolk House, Westminster, England, 4 June 1738; d. Windsor Castle, England, 29 January 1820) He ascended the throne on 25 October 1760. Because his position as a constitutional monarch masked his support for Parliamentary taxation of the colonies, George III remained popular there until he began taking concrete actions such as refusing to accept the olive branch petition and proclaiming on 23 August 1775 that New England was in a state of rebellion. Not until Thomas P aine's C ommon S ense swayed most Americans to view him as a “royal brute,” however, were the last ties of loyalty to the Crown dissolved and the final emotional barrier to independence removed. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
